Car Insurance Quotes for Teenagers
When the parent of a teen or the teen themselves first contacts car insurance companies for quotes, they may not believe what they hear. The rates that a responsible adult can expect to pay for car insurance pale in comparison to those that a new driver pays. It can actually be two or three times as much to insure a teen as opposed to someone who has been driving for several years.
Although quotes are meant to just give the driver a generalized idea of the price they will pay, there are things a teenager can do to help lessen the financial blow. Mentioning these facts while asking for a quote can reduce it significantly:
- If the teen successfully completed driver’s training, note this when asking for a quote. Once you choose an insurance company you will likely need to supply proof that the course was indeed completed by the teen in question.
- Install a car alarm or keep the car in a garage when not driving it. Both of these are viewed as safety features by the insurance company and may warrant a discount.
- If the teen will only be driving the car a limited time each month this should be brought up. This can result in the teen qualifying for either a low mileage discount or a secondary driver discount.
Even if every quote that is given is high there are still ways to eventually lower those costs. If the teen manages to have a clean driving record, the rates will drop significantly with each renewal. It’s incredibly important that the teen be made aware of the cost of driving, even if they aren’t responsible for making the insurance payments. This way they understand that misbehaving in the form of speeding or getting into accidents has serious financial consequences.
